So, you got Federal HST, Speer Gold, Hornady Critical Duty, after the big three, are there any less popular (but still commonly known) or "generic" brands sitting on sporting goods shelves that are just as effective & reputable but also less expensive?
Doc mentioned 8-points of Life(?) for selection criteria, but only got to 5 that I counted. Is there a complete list for reposting purposes?

Sent this clip to a friend with a picture on me belt carrying a Pedersoli 20ga (.610) howdah double pistol. Chuck approved.
"Everyone is dumb because they haven't read my classified draft report. If we had kept the M14 we would have won Afghanistan. The FBI should carry ball!" Everything new is bad, but they were all dumb for not instantly adopting my pet load. The finest firearm and chambering was the Martini Henry in .577!"
Huh?
@@PrimaryAndSecondary Selected highlights from the episode, with a heavy dose of satire.
No one is for the m14 or ball for duty
I’ll never forget the old ModCast he was on and ragged on PCC. He was so right…..
One of my favorite movies with guns as a kid was The Mummy/The Mummy Returns , ever since I’ve had the desire to own a Winchester 1897 riot shotgun paired with a S&W triple lock.
Good relatable life goals
DocGKR was willing to hook me up a decade or so ago by borrowing an precision upper receiver from him for a class. With us only knowing each other on Lightfighter at the time, I found this incredibly generous of him to allow me the opportunity to borrow the item. Luckily logistics worked out and I was able to take my duty rifle, but still... it speaks highly of the caliber of folks I had met on LF and P&S later.
Awesome panel and discussion
What a knowledgeable yet off putting guest
Gary isn't off putting. He goes right to the point. He presents facts without needing to sugar coat or make people feel better.
@PrimaryAndSecondary that is your perspective, mine is different
@sgtcwhatley there is a point after decades of this stuff where someone just presenting the info is quite welcome.
@PrimaryAndSecondary I welcome his knowledge, I don't expect things to be sugar coated. His presentation reminded me of Jeff Cooper, you respect the knowledge and the work, but the delivery is off-putting, no one wants to talked down to, especially when they agree with the presenter.
I think it’s just more so surprising that you had to make a comment that he was off putting. What are you doing even watching this stuff then?
Outstanding broadcast. Great to see Doc Roberts again!
Matt and company, yet another good and solid info packed episode! +][+
Love when Gary Roberts is on, getting the info straight from the horse's mouth as they say.
I love my Dangerous Dentist Brethren!!!
Cool episode plus an informative and humbling live chat...rifle duty ammo and / or pistol duty sights and red dots would be a cool episode ... Roberts goes into some of the higher caliber effects on tissue in this episode too. Many mini clips should be coming from this.
In the conversation a 5.56 round is a superior round compared to any handgun round, and I would agree. But when talking handgun rounds why wouldn’t a 10mm 155gr HP round traveling at 1350fps be superior to a 9mm 147gr HP round traveling at 950 fps. From your conversation there’s a narrative that all handgun rounds “poke holes” so just go with 9mm, there’s not much a difference between calibers. Massed Ayoob said it best….saying a Federal 9mm HST 147gr is the same a Federal 45 acp HST 230gr, which could penetrate 14” and expand an inch or more, is ridiculous. Makes absolutely no sense at all.
If handgun projectiles are just poking holes and there is no appreciable difference in the wounding from 9 to 45 - why do you think 10mm would create any additional wounding? More penetration? Sure, but that doesn't mean additional wounding.
You said handgun rounds are just “poking holes” I didn’t. With that logic I guess you could say rifle rounds are just “poking holes” too. Too many people who are so emotionally wrapped up in 9mm they can’t admit, at least to others, they’re better handgun calibers for self defense. It’s a psychological thing.
No, rifle rounds are creating greater wounding- I don't know how you came to that conclusion. This whole episode covers the topic.
Why do different rifle caliber rounds relate directly to the severity of a wound and not pistol caliber rounds? I hope you would agree a wound would be more severe if an elk was shot with a 300 magnum compared to a .223, right? But no difference in a wound when comparing a 10mm HP and a 9mm HP because they’re just “poking holes” according to you. Percentage wise there’s a pretty big difference in performance between the two handgun rounds stated, kinda like the rifle comparison right? Maybe 🤔
@ibsexplosion4178 not according to me - according to many sources, to include Fackler and Roberts. There is a velocity threshhold beyond 2200fps where rifle projectiles begin to create measurable wounding beyond the direct path of the bullet. Pistol rounds don't do that.
.577 OR bigger, alright, written down now lets go shopping, me lads. :)
That is awesome, Chuck Haggard, The Legendary Lawman, reads D.A.Kinsley's books with introductions written by Matt Easton of Scholagladiatoria channel and training school, epic crossover right there! +][+
Nothing scientific, but when I began pistol shooting a common round was the lead SWC 357, not very hot... their expansion & penetration seemed good. The same round was used for plinking and SD. The 230 45 ACP was also deemed good. This was based just on me just picking up rounds after shooting various items. 9mm was ID as just poking .38 holes. To this day, 357 SWC is preferred for wheelgun and 9mm, shot placement is king.
I would say that fluted projectiles are better than hollow points if they prevent overpenetration more reliably than JHPs that can fail to expand when they get plugged by clothing. Even modern premium hollow points are horribly unreliable in street results compared to the reliability we require of the pistols that shoot them. Are fluted bullets a cure for that? If so, then they are better.
@davidcolter this is with the understanding that the permanent wound channel will not be any larger than the diameter of the round. For some, that's an issue.
In my testing, when fired from a 2" barrel J-Frame, 357 Mag 140 gr. Xtreme Penetrator has almost identical penetration in ballistics gel to a 9mm +P 124 gr. Gold Dot. Permanent wound channel from the Xtreme Penetrator is about 25% larger.
@MoparPentastar extreme penetrator can not physically create a larger permanent channel than the diameter of the projectile
10mm, the promised land.. per my brother....he may be right
@@cheesenoodles8316 it's still just poking a hole
1st visit, flash bang, I love it. Always had a 357, and still have some 125 from the old days, does go bang in style (SP101 3")
These clips are great. Can't wait for the full episode.
I mean Victorian era combat still had cavalry charges with sabers...that's also when the us went to the .44 new model army and the minie ball was invented by the french foreign legion commander .
So where is the pocket-sized death ray?
Any 357 Magnum J-Frame or LCR
@@MoparPentastar yeah... no
Haha, so not much has changed
Great podcast!! We just shared this on our Facebook page 😁. Lots of great minds on this panel!!
Wait🤔🤨😁half of this reminds me of that Ron white joke😂🤣...on a serious note though ...Some of those lighter 357 mag loadings out of snubby barrels probably aren't terminally much better than a standard 9mm of similar construction as the velocity can really drop ... ammo selection might help a bit to keep some pen and expansion , but 357 magnum and most of its commercial loadings really benefit from having some barrel length and 9x19mm can be turned up quite far safely in certain modern pistols to get near the lower end of 357 in velocity ... which my favorite benefit is the trajectory really.
Magic only works if people believe in it. Like psychological stops.
😂 this is a Ron white joke waiting to re happen

When is this coming out
Modcasts usually drop on fridays
My grandma carried a Ruger Mark 1 22lr in her purse for probably 30 years. On one hand, it was probably not an ideal setup, but on the other hand she was comfortable with it and shot it very well out to 25 yd and was comfortable carrying it everywhere. I don't think she'd held what we would consider a modern gun in her entire life though.
The first click is the interal hammer locking back, and the second is the cylinder fully indexing. It's the same with S&W revolvers. It's not a semiauto.

Great show! Thank you all. I especially loved the conversation at the end.
Anyone remember MAINEPREPPER? What happened to him?
I bought both the UC 32HR along with the new blued SP101 327 magnum. Only thing I wish was different, I would have liked an option for the UC to come as a humpback shrouded hammer to have the best of both worlds with concealment and potential for long range accuracy with a single action trigger
As someone who works a local gun counter, I routinely deal with individuals (mostly ladies) who want something to defend themselves but are never going to be gun people who go to the range or go to courses. A revolver is a great gun for someone who isn’t going to put in much effort into training
So does this mean I can't have a submachine gun in a bag?
No, just make sure the mag stays in the sub gun and doesn't wonder around to your Staccato.
At what age do you start introducing kids to guns? 2 maybe 4?
I started my nephew at 8 i think. I would say that was too late. In the modern era there are too many bad habits they pick up from video games and other media that take a lot of effort to train out of them. TLDR the earlier the better as long as you are responsible. Single shot .22s like the Cricket are great.
@@levet1797 thanks, U was asking because I did start my 2 and 4 year old on guns, 22’s, 25 acp and 32’s and a lot of non firing replica handling.
I meant I was asking
my son's first time was at 4 years of age with a .22 handgun. went great, he was surprisingly accurate with it off the rip. all the practice with nerf guns paid off
